CONTEXT & JOB DESCRIPTION

As part of a small team specialised in the development of thin-film technolgies for X-ray optical applications, your principal mission will be to assist in the activities of the Multilayer Laboratory. You will report to the manager of the Multilayer Laboratory.

As a skilled engineer with a background in experimental physics, materials science or microelectronics processing, your missions will be the following:

  • Design, develop, deposit and characterise high quality multilayer based X-ray optics with applications for ESRF beamlines;
  • Contribute to the characterisation, calibration and improvement of processing methods;
  • Develop and optimize methods for thin-film deposition for X-ray applications;
  • Act in an advisory role for thin-film deposition applications for scientists and engineers when required.

EXPECTED PROFILE

  • Engineering degree in Physics, Materials Sciences, Optics or a related field. A PhD would be an asset;
  • 3 years minimum of experience in one or more of the following areas: thin film deposition, X-ray optics, optical engineering, surface metrology;
  • Previous practical experience in thin-film deposition and a sound understanding of the related instrumentation is required;
  • Meticulous attention to detail is essential;
  • Ability to handle high value, fragile optical components;
  • Familiarity with the simulation and characterisation of thin-films for X-ray applications;
  • Programming skills (particularly with Python) would be an advantage;
  • An interest in improving existing technologies and exploring new processes for multilayer deposition;
  • Ability to quickly understand technical requirements;
  • Initiative, Communication, team spirit, methodical, organised;
  • Project management skills;
  • You should be an effective team worker practiced in trouble-shooting and capable of managing your time to conduct several tasks in parallel;
  • Ability to publish results at international conferences and in scientific journals;
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required (working language at the ESRF).

WORKING CONDITIONS

Permanent contract.

The salary will be calculated on the basis of relevant qualifications and professional experience.
