Professor of Practice position in Renewable Energy in Electrical Power Systems

The Aalto Professor of Practice (PoP) system provides departments with the possibility to hire highly respected professionals opening new areas of research, education and professional work. The position also provides possibility for re-evaluation and dynamic development of the field. The candidate will be appointed for a part-time, 5-year fixed-term position. The position will begin during the year 2017.
Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation
The above-mentioned position is located in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation. The Department of Electrical Engineering and Automation (EEA) is an ecosystem where scientists and engineers from different fields interact and work together by crossing over traditional boundaries to solve the most challenging scientific and technological problems, to provide excellent education and to produce wellbeing for the society. Research in EEA is organized in four focus areas, which are: Power systems and conversion; Control, robotics and autonomous systems; Well-being and smart living environment; Industrial electronics and informatics. Because of the interdisciplinary nature, EEA partner network covers a large share of Finnish and international industries starting from the energy sector to manufacturing industries, including many machinery production companies, medical sector, cities and public organizations, and service providers. There have been several spin-off companies utilizing the research results.
Research field description
The professor of practice in renewable energy in electrical power systems is intended for an expert who would excel in research and teaching on integrating intermittent renewable energy sources, especially wind or solar, into the evolving power system. The successful candidate is expected to have a solid understanding of the modern power system and its development towards smart grids. Additionally, she or he should master power electronics needed for the integration and understanding of electric energy storages is considered as an advantage.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in department, college, and/or university service and outreach activities. A doctoral degree and notable expertise in research and professional work are required for obtaining a professor of practice position. In addition, the applicant´s experience in expert and management role in business or in public sector is evaluated.
