Technical Research Scientist

Technical Research Scientist

UCD - University College Dublin

Dublin, Ireland

Job Ref: 017254

Applications are invited for a temporary post of a Technical Research Scientist within UCD School of Medicine and Systems Biology Ireland.

University College Dublin (UCD) is seeking applications for a Technical Research Scientist to assist with the development of mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics at Systems Biology Ireland (SBI). Proteomics is one of the main high throughput technologies used in systems biology approaches. The increasing demand from a large and growing user base and the rapid technological developments in this field require an expansion of our workforce to meet service requirements. Thus, the post holder will support the work in the proteomics service including the analysis of routine samples, the implementation of new techniques, improvements to work-flows and enhanced use of the existing infrastructure. This will be of particular importance in ensuring adequate proteomics support is available to researchers on SBI-led programmes such as Precision Oncology Ireland.

The successful applicant will be part of the Kolch Group at Systems Biology Ireland, which has close collaborations with a wide range of clinics, industry and other academic organizations. The post holder will work closely with other proteomics specialists, computational modelers, experimentalists, and clinical/research students. To be successful in the role, candidates will need to be experienced in biochemistry or protein analysis and have a solid understanding of MS-based proteomics.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and analyse samples using MS-based proteomics as part of the proteomics service team;
  • Interact with users providing advice, feedback, cost estimates, and discuss design and results of proteomics experiments with them;
  • Proactively contribute to the development of the proteomics service by implementing new methods, workflows and analysis methods;
  • Collaborate with SBI researchers on proteomics projects;
  • Develop proteomics methods with and for other SBI groups;
  • Train users in different proteomics methodologies as required;
  • Maintain instruments in the proteomics facility;
  • Assist with administrative work in the proteomics facility, such as (but not limited to) managing user accounts, billing users, procurement of new equipment, and keeping records of samples analyzed;
  • Assist with the dissemination of the outcomes of this research by providing publication quality documentation of the methods used and results obtained;
  • Assist with grant applications by generating preliminary data and providing description of technologies, instrumentation and workflows;
  • Participate fully in the wider research and scholarly activities of the School, Institute and University;
  • Other duties that may arise.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications, skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post. Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidates satisfy these criteria.

Mandatory:

  • Third level degree (BSc, in protein biochemistry, proteomics or other relevant discipline);
  • Proven ability to design and carry out protein analysis experiments;
  • A solid understanding of MS-based proteomics;
  • Motivated and keen to learn new methods and technologies;
  • Being able to work to deadlines;
  • Excellent people skills;
  • Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently;
  • Candidates must demonstrate an awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion agenda.

Desirable:

  • MSc, in protein biochemistry, proteomics or other relevant discipline;
  • PhD, in protein biochemistry, proteomics or other relevant discipline;
  • Able to operate and maintain different LC-MS systems and MS instruments for proteomics;
  • Experience in acquiring LC-MS proteomics data and proteomics data analysis;
  • Proven ability to adapt or develop proteomics techniques and improve workflows;
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems in areas of proteomics and mass spectrometry;
  • Experience in working in a multidisciplinary environment, including working with experimentalists and clinicians.
