Optimization Engineer Energy

N-SIDE

Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium

At N-SIDE, we turn the most complex challenges into opportunities. We are an international and dynamic team of passionate and innovative mathematicians, software engineers and business experts. Our integrated optimization solutions facilitate complex business decision-making processes using Data Analytics and Machine Learning and transforming data into insights.

Impact 750 million people by bringing efficiency and transparency

Nowadays, a common algorithm is used daily to compute in a coupled way the electricity prices for 23 European countries respecting the capacity of the relevant network elements on a day-ahead basis. The average daily value of matched trades is over EUR 200 million. The algorithm is called EUPHEMIA and has been developed by N-SIDE. The algorithm is developed respecting the specific features of the various power markets across Europe and the electricity network constraints. It optimises the overall welfare and increases transparency. EUPHEMIA results from Price Coupling of Regions (PCR), the project of European Power Exchanges to develop a single price coupling solution. The integrated European electricity market is expected to increase liquidity, efficiency and social welfare. EUPHEMIA is owned by the corresponding Power Exchanges while supported and upgraded on a regular basis by N-SIDE. We provide maintenance and upgrade services, as well as a 365 days/year hotline support service to react immediately in any exceptional situation.

In this context, we are looking for two Optimization Engineers to further improve EUPHEMIA performances and to extend its approach to other very important power markets.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test and support innovative optimization solutions on energy topics: demand-response, energy markets, microgrids;
  • Strengthen the EUPHEMIA team, and improve our challenging algorithm for the European day-ahead electricity market;
  • Build strong relationship with international customers;
  • Manage the daily execution of important projects, involving many stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Master degree in applied mathematics, or in computer science with a strong optimization orientation;
  • Skills in mathematical modeling, mixed integer programming and non-linear programming;
  • Good knowledge of Java is required. Knowledge of Scala would be an asset;
  • Experience in market clearing or electricity markets would be an asset;
  • Fluency in English;
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities;
  • Collaborative approach and team spirit, with good communication skills.
