CIC Energigune is currently offering one Post-doctoral position in the Thermal Energy Storage (TES) group. The main activities of this research group are the identification of innovative heat storage solutions through the development of new materials, conceptual storage system designs and prototyping.

In this frame, we are now inviting applications for one Post-doctoral position in the field of physical modelling and numerical analysis of TES systems. The main activities to be developed by the selected candidate will consist on providing in depth understanding of heat and mass transfer and transport phenomena, as well as of phase transitions and reactional phenomena, at different scales and studying overall performances of the storage systems based on computational fluid dynamic approaches. The ultimate goal of the performed research will be the optimization and the final viability demonstration of different heat storage alternatives through computational calculations. Between the different thermal energy storage concepts considered special attention will be paid to packed-bed systems using phase change materials (PCM) as storage medium and boiling/condensing processes as a solution for heat transfer intensification between the storage material and the heat transfer fluid. The performance analysis of these storage systems will be analysed by their implementation on realistic environments related to heat demanding/consuming processes in the industry. The detailed analysis of the effect of using different heat transfer fluids, different PCMs - including different encapsulation solutions and PCMs packing within the storage system - as well as different working conditions (mass flow, inlet pressure and inlet temperature) on the final performances will represent the core activities of the research. The final model validation in real storage pilot plants is also considered.

Preference will be given to candidates with extensive hands-on experience in fluid dynamics and heat transfer using self-developed or commercial codes. A previous experience on numerical analysis of boiling/condensing processes within porous media would be highly appreciate.

Job functions

  • Modelling and numerical implementation of heat and mass transfer within packed-bed systems with PCMs as storage material and multi-phase fluid flow, including boiling/condensing phenomena at the solid-liquid interfaces;
  • Parametric analysis, optimization and final viability demonstration of the modelled packed-bed thermal energy storage solutions through computational fluid dynamic codes, using either commercial standard CFD codes or self-developments;
  • Contribution to the design of TES system prototypes based on the studied concept, either at a lab-scale or at a relevant scale with respect to applications;
  • Empirical validation of the developed numerical codes;
  • Participation to benchmarking activities;
  • Collaboration in project proposal writing to obtain funding from institutions and industrial sources;
  • Supervise graduate/master students.

What we need

Qualification requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering, or related fields;
  • Experience in the development, and implementation of physical macroscopic models;
  • Experience in fluid mechanics and heat transfer phenomena;
  • Experience in computational fluid dynamic (CFD) methodology;
  • Experience in transport phenomena through porous media;
  • Experience in boiling/condensing processes within porous media;
  • A team player who can collaborate with other groups, technical centres, and industries;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English.
