KBRwyle GmbH was established in October 2000 to provide requested human spaceflight medical support services to the ESA Space Medicine Office (SMO) at the European Astronaut Center in Cologne, Germany. Purpose of the Job

The general function of the Biomedical Engineer Flight Controller (BME) is to ensure astronaut health and well being by providing medical operational and engineering support to the crew surgeons, other medical specialists, and representatives of other mission support disciplines. This includes requirements development, document preparation, operational processes development, flight controller training, continuous coordination with the different European Space Agency (ESA) Human Spaceflight Integration and Operations entities and the International Partner medical teams, and console support as ESA Medical Operations representative in ESA space programs.

A BME is an integral part of the overall medical support structure for ESA space programs. The BME prepares operational paperwork & interfaces, the console set-up, and maintains crucial situation awareness for ESA Medical Operations in the real time flight control environment.

Background and Experience

The candidate should possess a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Science or a related field. Fluency in all forms of English communication. A background in physiology is important. A working knowledge of Medical Operations and space program procedures is preferred. Mission Control experience makes the Biomedical Flight Controller more effective. Communication, problem solving, and organizational skills are also necessary.

Additional experience in the following areas is an asset:

  • ISS Medical Systems and ISS Medical Operations ground segment infrastructure;
  • ISS space flight procedures development;
  • Space flight communication protocols;
  • ISS Astronaut training lesson design, development and implementation.

Job Functions

  • Provide Flight Controller operations support from the EAC or any other required control centre for all phases of space flight missions involving ESA astronauts, ESA hardware or any element that may potentially impact the health of an ESA or ISS astronaut;
  • Support the COLUMBUS Flight Control Team and the ESA Mission Directors on any crew health issue impacting or related to Columbus and ESA payload operations;
  • Maintain an excellent working relationship with all International Partner medical teams;
  • Manage and validate data communications received;
  • Work shifts on weekends, holidays and during early morning/late evening periods in support of mission duties;
  • Support on-call duties during periods when the ESA Medical Console is not manned by being available and able to get to EAC within 60 minutes of notification;
  • Support ESA and Joint Integrated simulations for upcoming flights;
  • Ensure a high awareness of mission, crew and ISS related information;
  • Travel within Germany, within Europe and internationally.
