Research Associate/Fellow, School Pharmacy

Purpose of the Role:

To work in a multidisciplinary team to isolate cell-type specific peptides for Glioblastoma (GBM) drug targeting. Specifically this will involve: (a) generation of phage display libraries; (b) isolation of surgical explants and cells from human GBMs; (c) next-generation sequencing to isolate peptide sequences; (d) validation of sequences by cloning and recombinant protein expression.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Conduct gene delivery experiments, assessing growth factor expression;
  • Engineer tissue models and process tissue slices ex vivo;
  • Interaction and coordination of research activities with external project collaborators - Including clinical staff and DSTL;
  • Preparation and presentation of progress reports and contributing to scientific publications;
  • Assistance in the supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • Organisation and assistance in general laboratory duties such as ordering of reagents, equipment maintenance, and laboratory housekeeping;
  • Assist in the supervision of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students projects;
  • Collaborate with academic colleagues on collaborative or joint research projects;
  • Active contribution to group meetings by e.g. problem solving, suggestions, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience:

Qualifications/Education

Essential

  • 1st or upper-second class honours degree;
  • PhD awarded, submitted or close to submission in gene delivery, tissue engineering, wound healing or related disciplines.

Desirable

  • Degree in cell biology, tissue engineering, or related;
  • PhD covering areas such as general cell biology, microbiology, bioreactor technology.

Skills/Training

Essential

  • Excellent skills in recombinant DNA technologies and cell culture;
  • Excellent problem solving abilities;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Excellent IT and organisational skills;
  • Ability to build effective relationships as part of a team and collaborate with others, both internally and externally.

Desirable

  • Experience of ex vivo tissue models;
  • Experience of NPWT;
  • Experience of wound healing;
  • Experience of ELISA assays;
  • General Molecular and microbiology.

Experience

Essential

  • Write high quality reports and papers for publication;
  • Present work effectively to a variety of professional and academic audiences at meetings and conferences.

Desirable

  • First author publications in high impact factor journals;
  • Gene delivery technologies;
  • Bioreactor technologies.
