Post-doc, Establishing Tools and Procedures to Genomically select Walloon Piétrain Boars Transmitting a Low Risk of Boar Taint

Needed profile:

The successful candidate will be responsible for interacting with a large number of partners, including pig breeders and producers and other stakeholders and will develop innovative scientific research to establish tools and procedures to respond to the problem of boar taint permitting the start of genomic selection in Wallonia against this problem in the Piétrain breed. The person will interact with the farmer and breeder association (awé) and “Belgian Piétrain” project, the Walloon Research Center (CRA-W), the CER Research Center in Marloie, the SoCoPro (College of Producers) and the existing Piétrain boar testing scheme organized by awé, CRA-W and ULiège-NGGM. At the level of the University of Liège (ULiège), the successful candidate should work in synergy with Dr. Martine Schroyen, with another post-doc hired in this project working in molecular biology (group of Prof. Luc Willems) and with the analytical chemistry group of Prof. Jean-François Focant.

For these reasons a number of skills are required for applications:

  • Being in the conditions of tax exemption;
  • Being interested in swine breeding;
  • Knowledge of computer (e.g. UNIX/LINUX), statistical (e.g. R or SAS) and data analysis tools for use in genetic research (e.g. AsReml or BLUPF90);
  • Holding or being in the process of completing a PhD in relation to animal breeding or a closely related field, demonstrating especially knowledge of quantitative aspects;
  • Being able to demonstrate ability to write in English through thesis, publications or similar scientific productions;
  • Being in possession of a driving license for cars (B) to join the various partners and breeders.

The following skills will be considered as an advantage:

  • Being able to show at least a major scientific production (MSc thesis, PhD thesis or publications) directly associated with the topic "genomic selection associated with boar taint";
  • Being able to demonstrate prior involvement in the management of a major research project;
  • Being able to demonstrate knowledge of French at the level sufficient to interact with local stakeholders. Knowledge of at least one other European language such as Dutch, German, Italian, or Spanish will be considered as an advantage to facilitate contacts with actors outside the Walloon Region.
