Applications are invited for a Post- Doctoral Research Fellow 2 in the UCD School of Chemistry This is a temporary post.

The Centre requires UCD Post-doctoral Research Fellows Level 2 (post title - Research & Development Innovation Officer) who is a high calibre post-doctoral research scientist with a broad skills base for research study design, set-up, implementation, data analysis/interpretation and reporting. This is an advanced research focused role, building on your prior experience as a post-doctoral fellow, where you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training under the supervision and direction of a Principal Investigator.

These individuals will have expertise that fits into the main research themes of the CALIN Operation and CBNI and a willingness to work at the interface between nanoscience and biology. The RDIO will be responsible for conducting all feasibility and medium-term research activities and will also be involved in the delivery of network conferences and technology workshop events. The primary purpose of the role is to develop new or advanced research skills and competences, on the processes of publication in peer-reviewed academic publications and scholarly dissemination, the development of funding proposals, and the supervision and mentorship of graduate students along with the opportunity to develop your skills in research led teaching.

The CALIN project is part-funded by the ERDF through the Ireland Wales Programme 2014-2020.

In addition to the Principal Duties and Responsibilities listed below, the successful candidate will also carry out the following duties specific to this project:

The Research & Development Innovation Officers will be expected to:

  • Conduct laboratory based collaborative research activities with business related focus in the areas of Nanobioscience, nanomedicine, nanodiagnostics, nanosafety; Health and environmental impact of nanoparticles and applications of bionanoscience for therapy and diagnostics;
  • Pro-actively contribute to and conduct research, including gather, prepare and analyse data, generate original ideas and present results;
  • Prepare reports, draft patents and papers describing the results of the research, both confidential and for publication;
  • Presentation of data both internally and externally, including such as oral presentation and written reports and publications;
  • Contribute to the organization and running of network conferences and technology-workshops;
  • Contribute to all activities to raise the external profile of CALIN including marketing (e.g. website news pieces), scientific discussion with potential collaborating industries, and presentation of case- studies at network events;
  • Interact positively and professionally with all industrial and academic partners in the CALIN Operation, and collaboratorsfrom other public sectors including health-care professionals;
  • Be self-motivated, apply and use own initiative, aiming to determine suitable ways to tackle challenges and seeking guidance when needed;
  • Keep informed of developmentsin the field in technical,specific and general terms and their wider implication for the discipline area, commercial applications and the knowledge economy.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a specified programme of research and scholarship under the supervision and direction of your Principal Investigator;
  • Engage in appropriate training and professional development opportunities as required by your Principal Investigator, your School or Institute, or the University.
  • Support your Principal Investigator and research group in the design and development of the research programme;
  • Support if required, the development of proposals for research funding;
  • Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research in which you are engaged as directed by and with the support of and under the supervision of your Principal Investigator;
  • Engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of your research group, School and Institute;
  • Take responsibility as requested for day-to-day advice and support of graduate research students associated with your research group;
  • Mentor and assist, as appropriate and as directed, the research graduate students in your group, School and Institute;
  • Carry out administrative and management work associated with your programme of research.

Selection Criteria

Selection criteria outline the qualifications,skills, knowledge and/or experience that the successful candidate would need to demonstrate for successful discharge of the responsibilities of the post.

Applications will be assessed on the basis of how well candidatessatisfy these criteria.


  • PhD in biology, chemistry, physics or a related discipline;
  • 2/3 years postdoctoral research experience;
  • Demonstrated understanding of operational requirements for a successful research project and managing resources;
  • Knowledge and application of the principles underpinning successful grant application;
  • Ability to identify and fulfil the academic writing requirements for target publications;
  • Proven record of working with team members and PhD students to help build their research skill and knowledge and to support and guide their professional development;
  • Generates new ideas and links and builds upon existing ideas to generate unique concepts and solutions;
  • Evidence of research activity (publications, conference presentations, awards) and future scholarly output (working papers, research proposals, an ability to outline a research project and experience of writing a funding application);
  • Excellent Communication Skills (Oral, Written, Presentation etc.);
  • Excellent Organisational and Administrative skills including a proven ability to work to deadlines;
  • Evidence of ability to organise your own research, including knowledge of relevant literature, identification of opportunities and the timely delivery of research outputs;
  • Evidence of ability to work effectively with external academic or industrial partners;
  • Ability to grasp complex dynamics involving confidentiality, intellectual Property, etc.;
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a dynamic, rapidly evolving arena.


  • Previousindustrial experience or experience in industrial engagement;
  • Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary environment;
  • Experience in setting own research agenda;
  • Ability to interact with leaders in industry, international organizations, government organizations, and academia;
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to manage multiple diverse tasks by setting priorities and scheduling resources within the team;
  • Knowledge of IP processes and knows how to protect findings
