Marine macroalgae are a major source of biologically active novel compounds with unique metabolic mechanisms. Ireland is renowned for its diversity of macroalgal species and macroalgal biomass, which is considered to be a dramatically underexploited resource. There are a number of bioactives in macroalgae. A significant observation, however, is that the bioactivity potency reported can vary with algal type and extraction methodology. The overall objective of this project is to validate the efficacy and identify the modes of action of macroalgal bioactives in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract, hence expanding the knowledge base required to commercialise products of benefit to animal and public health.
