The Ensembl team, a world leading supplier of genomics data resources and software, seek a highly motivated bioinformatician to work on metazoan organisms. You will join a team of bioinformaticians developing scalable computing resources to handle the ever increasing volumes of 'omics' data types. The technical computing aspects of this role are dynamic, and you must be willing to engage with technical change and be able to seek out and develop promising technologies in a proactive manner.

Your role

Your role will be to process a variety of 'omics' data types for Ensembl Genomes, develop scalable computing solutions, and coordinate exchange of data/information with other internal EBI teams as needed. You will also provide support for external collaborators via a helpdesk system, remote teleconferencing, or direct interaction. As part of a multi-diciplinary production team team you will need good verbal and written communication skills, be willing to work and contribute to standard working practices, and take responsibility for developing and maintaining novel software solutions.

You have

Masters or higher degree level or equivalent qualification in computational or related scientific discipline, with 2+ years of postgraduate bioinformatics experience. Proficiency in Perl, Python, SQL and Unix environments. You are a team worker with good communication and interpersonal skills, and are fluent with written and spoken English. You must be able to work to deadlines, and have a detail orientated approach to work.

You might also have

Experience with Java/C programming languages and version control systems (Git), knowledge of containerisation technologies and VMs. Experience using high performance computing frameworks such as Hadoop, Condor, Apache Spark or IBM/LSF. Experience with NGS sequencing technologies, sequence assembly and automated genome annotation.
