The “Diffraction Resolved by Energy and Angle Measurements” (DREAM) diffractometer is one of the first instruments to be constructed at European Spallation Source (ESS). The DREAM instrument is built in a collaboration of the Laboratoire Léon Brillouin (France) and Forschungszentrum Jülich (Germany). The concept of the instrument utilizes the long pulse and unpreceded peak brightness of the ESS source by pulse shaping choppers and by viewing both thermal and cold moderators. As a result, a particularly flexible choice between high resolution and high intensity modes can be offered to the users. 2D position-sensitive 10B-detector technology will be capable for high position-sensitive resolution and also for expected high count rates. Powder diffraction, pair-distribution function and low-angle neutron scattering measurements with polarized neutrons will be possible at DREAM.

Duties

The purpose of this position is to establish an independent research program at the DREAM diffractometer at ESS during and after its commissioning phase. The program shall encompass an internationally recognized and competitive research on innovative materials, leading to advances in fundamental understanding of materials. This position resides in the Inorganic Chemistry research programme at Uppsala University, but with a stationing at the DREAM diffractometer, within the Diffraction and Imaging Division at the ESS in Lund, Sweden. The work involves travel, mainly domestic between Uppsala and Lund, but also international.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • As a part of the DREAM instrument team, commission the DREAM diffractometer and prepare it for the user operations;
  • Independently conceive and develop innovative materials research programs, in close collaboration with the DREAM instrument team;
  • Present the instrument and related research results at scientific conferences and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner;
  • Initiate and lead the instrument upgrades of the DREAM instrument to grow the user community and to broaden the materials research programs;
  • Participate in project planning and execution for the DREAM commissioning phase;
  • Work with academic partners to develop new proposals;
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements;
  • Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics of UU and ESS.

Requirements

  • Education: A PhD in Materials Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics, Applied Physics, or closely related field is required;
  • Experience: The incumbent must have a minimum of five years of demonstrated technical experience in the area of neutron and x-ray scattering basic research on advanced materials, and must possess established creativity in the fields of neutron and/or x-ray diffraction;
  • Competences: Possession of a strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications, preferably as a lead author, in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences is required, as well as the capability to contribute to the production of research proposals;
  • Knowledge: Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. The incumbent must be safety conscious and have superior laboratory skills. The ability to communicate in English to an international scientific audience is key to success;
  • Other requirements: The abilities to be a self-starter, to work independently and be willing to participate creatively in a collaborative team both internal and external are required.

Must be able to work on multiple tasks in a limited amount of time and to independently set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks to meet deadlines. The incumbent must be capable of innovative, independent research.
