The Purpose of the Role

The School of Medicine invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Physiology. Applications are sought from candidates at an early stage in their career with proven potential for research and teaching excellence. The successful applicant will be a full member of the academic staff in the School and of the Discipline of Physiology. They will work with other academic staff, technical staff, administrative staff, researchers, and students in a collaborative and international environment for research and scholarly endeavours. They will be able to avail of stateof-the-art facilities offered by the School and the Trinity Biomedical Research Institute (TBSI).

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute at all levels to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching within the Discipline and the School of Medicine. The appointee will be expected to contribute to interdisciplinary curricular teaching, supervision, and mentoring. Candidates will have a proposed research programme that complements and strengthens existing initiatives in the School of Medicine and the Discipline of Physiology. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to engage in and contribute to undergoing research initiatives in the School of Medicine and the affiliated research institutes and centres.

Main Responsibilities

Teaching

  • Contribute to and provide academic leadership in all teaching and related activities in the School and College at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Provision of lectures and practical classes in cellular and systems Physiology, to undergraduate students in Physiology, Medicine and related Science degree programmes;
  • Development and coordination of teaching modules relevant to postgraduate courses offered by the Discipline;
  • Supervision of final year undergraduate and MSc research/taught projects;
  • Supervision of PhD students.

Research

  • Undertake effective externally funded research in Physiology/or related area, and disseminate the knowledge derived in suitable fora;
  • Establish and lead an independent group of researchers with international impact and contribute to the overall research profile of the School of Medicine;
  • Expectations in terms of numbers of publications and level of funded research will be in line with the Assistant Professor grade;
  • Collaborating with colleagues and where possible mentoring junior researchers and/or post-doctoral researchers.

Standard Duties

  • Participation in the wider academic life of the College as appropriate;
  • Contribute to published research output in journals of high standing;
  • Contribute towards the future development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes;
  • Assume a leadership role and managerial role within the Discipline of Physiology and the School of Medicine, appropriate to the level of appointment.

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role.

Qualifications

  • Excellent academic record and have completed a Ph.D. in Physiology or closely related area (Essential);
  • Academic publications in peer reviewed international journals and/or publications of equal standing of recognised originality and value (Essential).

Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate will be expected to clearly demonstrate the following:

Teaching

  • The ability to provide lectures and practical classes in cell and systems Physiology, to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a cogent and coherent manner (Essential);
  • The ability to develop and coordinate transdisciplinary teaching modules relevant to the BA (Mod) in Physiology, B.Sc. in Human Health and Disease, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes relevant to Physiology within the School of Medicine;
  • Provide evidence of the ability to supervise research projects for final year undergraduates in Physiology and related degree programmes, in addition to MSc students;
  • Ability and willingness to teach outside of immediate area of specialisation;
  • Provide evidence of experience with e-learning/innovative platforms for teaching purposes.

Research & Scholarship

  • A record in research, compatible with career stage, that supports the ability to undertake research as a Principal Investigator and the potential for leadership in their field (Essential);
  • Proposed research plans which complement the strategic plans of the School and that hold potential to strengthen the research profile of the Discipline;
  • The candidate will have experience of working collaboratively and effectively in a multidisciplinary and/or international research environment.

Administration, Contribution to University and Engagement with Discipline & Society

  • Potential to coordinate, manage and develop modules and courses at university level (Essential);
  • Ability to undertake administrative responsibilities as required by the Discipline, School and University;
  • Organisational skills necessary to the performance of teaching, research, and administration requirements of the role of Assistant Professor;
  • Experience of organizing research seminars, symposia, recruitment initiatives and other activities.

Skills

  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Planning and organisational skills, particularly coordinating processes and systems;
  • Ability to represent the School and College on appropriate national and international advisory boards and professional bodies.
