Postdoc Position in Materials Chemistry, Additive Manufacturing

Postdoc Position in Materials Chemistry, Additive Manufacturing

Uppsala University

Uppsala, Sweden

Work duties

Postdoctoral fellow in the group of bulk materials within the research program for inorganic chemistry. The research focuses on how the properties of materials are affected by chemical composition and crystal structure. For example, it studies how the process parameters and synthesis methods affect material properties. An important area is new materials for additive manufacturing. The postdoc will work in the intersection of chemistry, physics and materials science; More specifically, with synthesis and characterization of alloys for application in additive manufacturing of anisotropic materials. The project will be carried out in the group of Professor Martin Sahlberg within the program of inorganic chemistry at the Department of Chemistry-Ångström. Synthesis with high temperature in e.g. electric arc furnace, induction furnace and possibly gas transport methods will be used. Characterization will mainly be performed with diffraction methods such as single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction and in-situ measurements with synchrotron radiation and electron diffraction.

The work duties also include:

  • Teaching in the first, second and third cycles of studies
  • Supervision of degree projects and doctoral students
  • Actively seeking external research funding
  • Collaboration with industry and wider society
  • Administration related to the work duties listed above

Requirements

PhD degree in Materials chemistry/Inorganic chemistry or equivalent, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Materials chemistry / Inorganic chemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

Applicants should be highly motivated and interested in research in chemistry and physics as well as research on additive manufacturing. Documented knowledge in additive manufacturing and high-temperature synthesis with different methods, diffraction and general knowledge of structure-property relationship is a requirement. You must have good knowledge of written and oral English.

Desirable qualifications

Practical experience in new alloy systems (e.g. high-entropy alloys), magnetic materials and knowledge of different techniques for synthesis and analysis are merits.
