Job Description
The planned research activity is an entry contribution to a collaborative Research Unit that is specialized in the investigation of biogeochemical processes and air-sea exchange in the sea-surface microlayer, funded by the Deutsche Forschungs-gemeinschaft (DFG) and coordinated by the University of Oldenburg. The qualified candidate will perform meta data analyses as well as model simulations, with special focus on diffusion-controlled adsorption (enrichment) of organic matter in the sea surface microlayer. Within the project consortium BASS, new experimental data are collected which, together with already published observations, will be used for the design of simulation experiments, model development, and data-model synthesis.
The successful candidate will join the Biogeochemical Modeling group, which covers a broad range of expertise, from local and regional ocean model applications to earth system modelling.
Qualification
Requirements for a successful application are:
- a PhD Degree in either environmental sciences, oceanography, chemistry, physics, marine sciences or in a related subject
- knowledge in numerical modelling and analyses of complex data
- strong programming skills in R or python
- excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written)
- record of publishing journal articles and presenting scientific results at international and national conferences
Desirable qualifications would be:
- fundamental understanding of processes of advection, diffusion and intraparticle adsorption, including knowledge of Langmuir- and Freundlich isotherms
- basic experience with model simulations of plankton growth and interaction
- knowledge about model parameter optimisation
- familiarity with FORTRAN programming
