The Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research (IOI) is an exciting initiative creating major new opportunities for science and advances in human health, and now aims to recruit a pro-active and motivated Laboratory Manager to join the IOI Chemistry Team.

This is a unique opportunity to work in the IOI on Biological Research which is principally concerned with the chemical mechanisms of biological processes in organisms ranging from bacteria to humans.

You will be responsible for managing the day-to-day laboratory coordination for the IOI Chemistry Team, ensuring effective delivery of research while maintaining effective laboratory space and assets.

The post holder will be responsible for the management of supporting infrastructure for biological work, including with respect to equipment, biological safety/ethics, and supply of reagents. This will involve some hands-on work, e.g. effecting minor repairs. The post holder is expected to have experimental knowledge of many of the biological techniques, good organisational skills, and a desire to support interdisciplinary cutting-edge science by working with researchers from many different backgrounds and career stages.

The post holder is expected to foster a culture of one team approach in achieving research and project delivery excellence, high customer service and professional standards, compliance with statutory, regulatory and legislative compliance, as well as providing best practice support and guidance.

Selection criteria

Essential:

  • Hold an undergraduate degree in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, biophysics, or biology and have appropriate laboratory experience for the position, and / or hold a postgraduate qualification;
  • Have strong experimental and analytical skills, and a keen interest in supporting research at the chemistry/biology interface;
  • Good knowledge of relevant statutory UK/EU legislation relating to health and safety;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels;
  • Ability to organise work time efficiently and handle competing priorities to deliver results to a required high standard and to deadlines;
  • Have experience in at least several of the following: microbiology/fermentation/cell culture, protein purification, operation and maintenance of biological research equipment, ELNs, computer operated equipment;
  • Be willing and have the ability to work as part of a team;
  • Be motivated and enthusiastic about science, well organised, and able to work to deadlines;
  • Have evidence of strong organisational skills and the ability to keep accurate and reliable records of work carried out as well as being capable of organising others to ensure good running of equipment, clean and safe laboratories;
  • Show an ability to support research (e.g. laboratory demonstration to research students) by organising and educating researchers from different backgrounds and skill levels;
  • Show an ability to carry out the biological and radiation safety aspects of the job;
  • Have experience of carrying out the financially related aspects of the job, e.g. negotiating with suppliers and managing group orders/consumable budgets.

Desirable:

  • Hold a scientific PhD;
  • Experience of laboratory budget management.
