Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Aqueous Geochemistry and Sedimentary Processes

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Aqueous Geochemistry and Sedimentary Processes

University of Oxford - Department of Earth Sciences

Oxford, United Kingdom

The Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Assistant (PDRA) in aqueous geochemistry. The role is focused on quantifying processes that may have influenced the global Hg in an effort to interpret the pre-Mesozoic history of volcanism and global change through sedimentary geochemistry. The project will focus on experimental investigation of Hg partitioning between solids and solutions in anoxic ferruginous seawater, with a view to identifying underlying kinetic and thermodynamic controls on the incorporation of Hg into newly formed solid phases in ancient marine sediments.

Applications are invited from candidates with relevant expertise in geochemistry and mineralogy, but desirable criteria include expertise in experimental aqueous geochemistry (specifically with anoxic systems), application of kinetic theory to problems in earth sciences, expertise in carbonate and/or sulfide mineralogy and geochemistry, and experience in the application of experimental/theoretical data to the sedimentary record. Analytical expertise in materials characterisation (vibrational spectroscopy), X-ray diffraction, stable isotope and trace element geochemistry are desirable. You will work as part of a wider team of geochemists, mineralogists, and sedimentary geologists focused on understanding chemical sedimentation and global element cycles through Earth's early history.

The candidate will have (or be about to obtain) a PhD and have significant experience in aqueous and analytical geochemistry, mineralogy, good communication skills, the ability to work in a team, good IT and data handling skills, and preferably a track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
