To strengthen our team in the division 7.2 "Buildings and Structures" in Berlin-Steglitz, starting as soon as possible, we are looking for a Postdoctoral research associate (m/f/d) in the field of civil or mechanical engineering or a comparable field (focus geotechnics or steel design).

Your responsibilities include:

The expansion of renewable energies will be of outstanding importance in the coming years. To ensure that this transformation to climate neutrality succeeds and that the technological lead is maintained, research and development are faced with major challenges. To this end, BAM has combined research into the safety of wind turbines in the Wind@BAM Competence Centre.

The focus of the competence centre is on mechanically stressed components such as rotor blades, support structures and foundations. With a unique infrastructure for large component testing and modern digital analysis methods, investigations can be carried out on wind turbine components for strength, fatigue and durability. The current focus is equally on new foundation and support structure concepts and increasingly on extending the service life or repowering existing turbines.

The scope of the position includes scientific activities in the Wind@BAM competence centre with a focus on experimental and numerical investigation of foundation concepts.

Specific tasks include:

  • Initiation, application, management and processing of research projects in the field of optimized load-bearing structures and foundation concepts, also with regard to their strengthening;
  • Openness to the implementation of a holistic approach to geotechnical and construction issues, including interaction problems;
  • Interdisciplinary cooperation with other specialist disciplines, e.g. on corrosion or fatigue;
  • Conception and implementation of experimental tests as head of a project team;
  • Application and testing of measurement and analysis methods together with experts in the field of non-destructive testing;
  • Scientific publication and lecture activities;
  • Updating the research agenda and strategic development of the Technical Centre;
  • Advising authorities in the field of offshore wind energy.

Your qualifications:

  • Successful scientific university degree specialising in civil or mechanical engineering or a comparable field and a very good PhD;
  • Fulfilment of the civil service and career requirements as well as willingness to be taken on as a civil servant in the initial office of the career path of the higher natural science service/technical administrative service/non-technical administrative service;
  • In-depth practical and theoretical knowledge of the design of wind turbines with at least two focal points in the area of: Design of wind turbines or components, Foundation design with reference to the execution of typical foundation variants of offshore wind turbines, Structural reliability analysis, Simulation of installation processes or the structure-subsoil interaction, Innovative analysis methods for damage detection and evolution;
  • Experience with component tests, measurement concepts and the digitalisation of test data;
  • Experience in acquisition and management of RnD-projects;
  • Experience in supervision of young scientists;
  • Confirmed practice in publication and presentation of scientific results;
  • Very good command of German and English;
  • Goal-oriented and structured way of working, initiative/commitment, ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, willingness to learn as well as conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills.
