The Department of Applied Physics is now looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Optics and Photonics.

We are looking for an outstanding postdoc to join the Optics and Photonics group for theoretical and experimental research on nanophotonics. The research will be focused on the development of novel approaches to design, create, and investigate photonic metasurfaces that efficiently trap light and enhance nonlinear optical phenomena. The position is fully funded by the Research Council of Finland and involves collaboration with researchers from the Department of Electronics and Nanoengineering at Aalto University, as well as international collaboration with a research team from the Netherlands.

Your role and goals

In this position, you will act as a researcher working on design and characterization of nonlinear metasurfaces supporting resonant optical modes known as photonic bound states in the continuum. The design will be based on numerical modelling methods. The samples will be fabricated using the cleanroom facilities of Aalto University and investigated by nonlinear optical methods using the equipment of the Optics and Photonics group.

As a member of the group, you will:

  • use your knowledge and experience to achieve scientific breakthroughs in research on nonlinear metasurfaces and bound states in the continuum,
  • advance the field by overcoming existing challenges and developing new scientific ideas,
  • support research activities of other group members,
  • write and publish high-impact articles,
  • collaborate with other research groups, including participation in international research visits.

Your experience and ambitions

Minimal requirements for the candidate are:

  • doctoral degree in physics, photonics, materials science, or another relevant field,
  • excellent scientific writing skills evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals,
  • high level of understanding of principles of optics and photonics, especially related to nonlinear optics at the nanoscale and optical properties of periodic structures,
  • familiarity with the relevant theoretical and experimental methods, such as numerical simulations and optical microscopy.
  • excellent command of English; Finnish language is not required.
