Professorship Mineralogy and Petrology

Professorship Mineralogy and Petrology

Technical University of Darmstadt

Darmstadt, Germany

About our institute

The Institute of Applied Geosciences (IAG) in the Department of Materials and Geosciences at the Technical University of Darmstadt focusses on the key topics Water - Energy - Environment. In environmental research, the geosciences can make significant contributions in the areas of water, soil and atmosphere, e.g. the behavior of pollutants in natural environmental compartments or climate research.

In-depth knowledge of mineralogical and petrological principles is a prerequisite for these topics, both in teaching and in application-oriented research. Through its specific research profile, the professorship contributes in particular to environmental research at the Institute and forms an essential core competence for the Institute's environmental geoscience-oriented fields of work, such as soil mineralogy and soil chemistry, aquatic geochemistry and atmospheric and aerosol research. It can also contribute to other applied issues, e.g. in the field of energy research, engineering geology or hydrogeology. The activities are integrated into the research field Energy and Environment (E+E) at TU Darmstadt.

Your tasks

The professorship should represent the subjects of mineralogy and petrology, in relation to the applied and engineering-oriented environment of a technical university, in research and teaching, and establish an internationally visible research group. The applied research focus of the professorship should be at least in one of the areas of 'Clay Minerals and Clay Rocks', 'Low Temperature Petrology' or 'Sedimentary Petrology'.

The willingness to actively participate in TU-internal, national or international research networks is required. The professorship should also participate in undergraduate teaching in the geosciences and, in particular, take responsibility for mineralogical and petrological introductory modules. In addition, courses relating to one or more of the above-mentioned main research topics of the institute should be offered at Bachelor's and Master's level. This includes active participation in geoscientific field education, especially in excursions and mapping courses.

A strong willingness for national and international cooperation and interdisciplinary work both within the department and with other departments at TU Darmstadt is expected.

Your profile

We are looking for an internationally recognized scientist with a research profile that further strengthens the profile of the institute. We expect a degree in geosciences or a related subject, followed by a qualified doctorate. In addition, you should have a proven track record of successful acquisition of third-party funding and visible research contributions in the applied disciplines of mineralogy and petrology. Experience in leading or participating in project networks is an advantage. In addition, we require didactic and pedagogical aptitude as well as a willingness to participate in academic self-administration.
