Staff Scientist - Cell Biology and Electron Microscopy

HT - Human Technopole

Milan, Italy

Job description

APPLICATION CLOSING DATE: July 13th, 2024

Human Technopole (HT) is an interdisciplinary research institute in Milan (Italy) created and supported by the Italian government to develop innovative strategies promoting human health. HT adopts a multidisciplinary and integrated approach, combining genomics, computational and structural biology, neuroscience, and data and decisions sciences.

Fondazione Human Technopole is looking for one highly motivated Staff Scientist with a strong background in Electron Microscopy (EM) and cell biology to work in the Group of Prof. Marino Zerial.

The Zerial Group works on endocytosis - from its molecular mechanisms to implications in cell and tissue organisation. Its interests range from the assembly and functional characterization of the endosomal fusion machinery to establishing hepatocyte cell polarity and liver tissue structure and function. The Group uses a unique interdisciplinary approach combining biochemical and biophysical methods with advanced light microscopy, cell biology and computer-aided three-dimensional tissue reconstruction.

The Staff Scientist will work on the following projects:

  1. Study of the compartmentalisation of endosomes in membrane subdomains using Correlative Light-Electron Microscopy (CLEM) and Electron Tomography. This work will be complemented by genetic perturbations to understand their underlying machineries and the structure-function relation of the endocytic pathway;
  2. 3D reconstruction of the liver tissue using Serial Block-Face SEM. This project aims at understanding the design principles of liver tissue structure and function, using the developing and regenerating mouse liver as a model system.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Utilise Correlative Light-Electron Microscopy (CLEM) and Electron Tomography techniques for detailed imaging and conduct studies on the compartmentalisation of endosomes in membrane subdomains;
  • Work closely with colleagues to help interpret findings and draft manuscripts and other reports for publication;
  • Collaborate with postdocs and other colleagues to help develop and apply methodologically suitable analysis strategies to planned investigations;
  • Scientifically supervise PhD and Master’s students and oversee post-doctoral research activities;
  • Proposing projects and obtain additional funding by applying for grants that are relevant to the group’s research lines;
  • Anticipate, communicate and solve any potential problems that might arise when doing research;
  • Contribute to reports, presentations and publications;
  • Help to get under way new projects and collaborative consortia in the -omics research field in general, and in genomics in particular;
  • Reviewing, analysing, or presenting the results of their own research and that of the junior researchers they will be jointly supervising;
  • Contributing to the development of institutional strategies.

Job requirements

Mandatory requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field such as Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, or a related discipline;
  • Proven expertise in EM techniques, including CLEM, Electron Tomography, and Serial Block-Face SEM;
  • Strong background in cell biology with a focus on endocytic pathways and tissue structure;
  • Experience in conducting genetic perturbations and analysing their impact on cellular processes;
  • Fluency in English.

Organizational and social skills:

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Application Instructions

Please apply by sending:

  1. a CV;
