The Purpose of the Role

The purpose of the post is to contribute to the academic and educational missions of the Discipline of Clinical Microbiology, School of Medicine, TCD. The appointee will coordinate module 1 ‘Basic and Molecular Microbiology' of the MSc in Healthcare Infection and co-coordinate teaching to the year 2 medical students in the ‘Infection and Immunology’ module. The appointee will also contribute to other teaching in the discipline.

This is a specific purpose contract to provide cover for a staff member who is fulfilling a college Officer role in the University.

Context

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor in Clinical Microbiology within the School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin. The postholder will have responsibility for the coordination of module 1 ‘Basic and Molecular Microbiology' of the MSc in Healthcare Infection and will contribute to undergraduate medicine teaching and other teaching within the University, and will be expected to contribute to and expand the Discipline’s research programme in infection. The applicant will fill in for a member of staff seconded to a role in the Provost’s leadership team.

The Discipline of Clinical Microbiology is based in the Sir Patrick Dun Laboratory on the St James’s Hospital campus and is located adjacent to the Hospital’s Diagnostic Microbiology laboratory and is part of the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI). The Diagnostic Microbiology Laboratory is the largest in the country with a broad repertoire of tests being performed in bacteriology, mycology, virology and serology, and also accommodates the national MRSA Reference Laboratory, and the Irish Mycobacteria Reference Laboratory.

The successful candidate will have a track record of research in the field of clinical microbiology, will integrate into a multidisciplinary research environment within TTMI and will be expected to actively seek external research funding to support their research programme. The appointees research should complement or add to the dynamic research of the department. Current areas of interest include medical mycology (antifungals, invasive fungal infections and host-pathogen interaction), the human microbiome, Gram negative bacteria, respiratory infections, host-pathogen interactions and antimicrobial resistance.

The successful candidate will be required to assist in the supervision of research students of the staff member who is on secondment. In addition, the appointee will ensure the continued smooth running and functioning of that staff member’s lab. That lab is focused on enterobacteria, genomics, and phage – so applicants with strengths in those areas will be particularly welcome.

Additionally, the post will include administrative duties within the discipline and the School of Medicine.

The successful applicant will have a PhD and have completed post-doctoral research in the field of Microbiology. They should be highly motivated and dynamic and have an ability to teach, engage effectively in academic administration and to contribute to ongoing programme development.

Main Responsibilities

Teaching

The candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead on the co-ordination of module 1 of the MSc in Healthcare Infection and contribute to other relevant postgraduate programmes in the School of Medicine;
  • Contribute and deliver teaching in clinical microbiology in the Laboratory Medicine course to undergraduate medical students (in particular in Year 2 of the five year medical programme);
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, dissertations and students;
  • Develop and co-ordinate clinical microbiology modules and teaching material for both traditional and online delivery at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Research

The candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop an independent research programme in the area of microbiology and particularly, in the areas of Enterobacterial virulence, bacterial genomics and/or bacteriophage;
  • Assist in the continuation and development of an already established programme. This will include supervision, assisting with the submission of manuscripts, and rebuttals;
  • Work collaboratively with key partners within the Discipline of Clinical Microbiology as well as within the School and College to develop strengths in clinical microbiology;
  • Perform excellent research of international impact;
  • Contribute to the delivery of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Strategy for College.

Administration

The candidate will be expected to:

  • Carry out administrative duties relating to courses/modules/programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Contribute to administrative duties in the Discipline of Clinical Microbiology and the School of Medicine;
  • Participate in the wider academic life of the College and the academic health sciences centre (Trinity Health Ireland) as appropriate.

Person Requirements

The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills, and attributes.

Qualifications

The successful candidate must have:

  • A Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline;
  • Completed three years’ of post-doctoral research in a relevant field of medical microbiology, e.g., microbial diseases (especially bacterial). Candidates with expertise in Enterobacterial virulence, bacterial genomics and/or bacteriophage biology are particularly welcome.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Proven record in research and ability to contribute to the Discipline’s research strands
  • Demonstrate research plans which complement the strategic plans of the Discipline and School
  • Proven ability or evidence of potential to establish a strong record of research and publication in a relevant field
  • An ability to conduct research in a relevant area and to supervise research projects
  • Knowledge of recent research in the relevant areas
  • Publication of articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • Participation in research seminars and conferences
  • Experience with teaching at university level.

Research

  • Proven ability or evidence of potential to attract external research funding;
  • Potential for recruiting and supervising research postgraduate students.

Teaching

  • Ability to provide lectures and practical classes in clinical microbiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • An ability to develop and co-ordinate teaching modules relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate clinical microbiology programmes;
  • Evidence of personal contribution and commitment to excellence in teaching;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Experience of supervising undergraduate or postgraduate dissertations;
  • Experience of developing new modules and teaching material;
  • Experience of working collaboratively and effectively in an inter and multidisciplinary environment;
  • Experience of using new teaching media and technologies.

Administration

  • Potential to co-ordinate, manage and develop modules and courses in a university setting;
  • An ability to use statistical or other relevant tools to analyse assessment and evaluation programmes and to write reports;
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills;
  • An ability to establish targets and goals to support School and College strategies;
